In case you forgot or have missed the commercials, ads and other marketing cues, Valentine’s Day is this month. This “holiday” is often associated as being a “Hallmark holiday” or manufactured by the card and chocolate industries. This year, take a different approach and focus on the quality of your relationships with family members, friends and even coworkers.

Several scientific studies on social connections have shown that people with positive and satisfying relationships are happier, have fewer health problems and live longer. Strong relationships may also promote safer behavior and lessen the risks of social isolation. Healthy friendships and relationships take time, care and attention. Find people with common interests with whom you enjoy spending time. Conflicts may arise but proceed with caution – strive to come to a common understanding and compromise when possible.
Not only do healthy relationships contribute to a healthy heart, but there are six practices that may lower your risk for heart disease:

  • Watch your weight
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke
  • Control your cholesterol and blood pressure
  • Drink alcohol in moderation
  • Get active
  • Eat healthy
