When life feels overwhelming, one of the biggest factors that determines whether we feel hopeful or hopeless is our sense of control. Even if you’re not facing a medical crisis, everyday challenges — like money worries, family demands or work deadlines — can take a toll. The good news: You can dial down stress by dialing up your perceived control.

Here are a few quick tips to boost that feeling:

Focus on what you can gain. How you frame a challenge shapes how empowered you feel. Shift your focus from “What might I lose?” to “What can I gain?” Even small wins — like creating a little breathing room in your schedule or budget — can boost your sense of agency.

Name the emotion you’re feeling. A quick, powerful way to reduce stress is to “name it to tame it.” Get specific — worried, embarrassed, frustrated. Labeling emotions strengthens self-control and softens difficult feelings.

Try slow-exhale breathing. A longer exhale can calm your nervous system and support clearer thinking. Try 5-2-7 breathing: Inhale for five seconds, hold for two, exhale for seven.

Boost your mood before tackling a tough task. A quick mood boost — like a favorite song or a funny clip — can spark motivation under stress. Enjoy the lift, then use that positive momentum to tackle what’s weighing on you.

Strengthen connection and ask for support. Feeling isolated can drain your sense of control, but connection brings it back. Reach out to a friend, join a group or volunteer — simple steps that remind you that you’re not alone and can handle what comes your way.

Taking charge doesn’t require a dramatic life overhaul — just small, consistent actions that help your brain register, “I’ve got this.” When you focus on workable choices and the parts of life you can steer, stress becomes more manageable and solutions feel a little more within reach.
