Well Said! Well-being tips brought to you by RecWell!
With classes winding down and the end of the semester approaching, there can be a lot of things competing for our time and energy. In busier moments or during celebrations, we may turn to food or other substances to find quick comfort or to be social. Amidst the hustle and bustle, it’s crucial to care for ourselves first, especially by fueling our bodies with nutritious food and making choices that work for us.

Food for Thought
We all need food to survive, and it can be challenging to find the best foods to nourish and fuel ourselves when life gets hectic. Here are some prompts to help you tune-in to what you need:
- Challenge your assumptions about food. No foods are “good” or “bad.” All food fuels us!
- Pay attention to your hunger. Your body needs a balance of fat, carbs, and proteins to function: all foods fit!
- Discover the satisfaction factor. Eat what you really want and enjoy the taste and textures!
- Be present when eating. Pause and ask yourself how it tastes! Are you still hungry? How do you feel right now?
Mindful Mindset
Holidays or gatherings can bring joy and connection, and can also bring stress and anxiety, especially around food and substance use. How can we navigate these situations with mindfulness? Remember:
- Not every meal will be “nutritious”. There’s no right way to eat, there’s only what’s right for you. Listen to your body and try not to judge yourself or others.
- No is always an answer. Honor and uphold your needs, even if they differ from the group. Setting boundaries is an act of self-care.
- Safety is priority! If you do choose to use alcohol or other drugs, remember to stick with friends and watch out for each other.
- Be present. Take a few deep breaths before meals or gatherings. A moment of mindfulness can help you feel grounded and less overwhelmed.
