Small Things Make Big Differences in Your Stress Tolerance

There are a few small things you can do to decrease your stress during the work day. This will help you feel better at the end of the day and be healthier as well.

Get your day off to a positive start: find a system that works for you (and your children too) to be ready without rushing. When you arrive already frantic, little stressors seem much bigger. It may be helpful to take a moment at the start of your work day to say, write, or think of a gratitude statement.

Know the expectations. If your requirements seem unclear or are often changing, ask your supervisor. Uncertainty often seems to trigger stress.

Get comfortable. If your chair makes your back ache, see if you can switch it out. If the noise level is distracting or annoying, maybe try a white noise machine or headphones, if appropriate. You spend many hours at work, and being comfortable can help you better handle the things that create stress.

Enjoy a walking lunch. Stepping outside helps you feel better, and then you add in movement and time to soak in your surroundings—a beautiful sky, a wonderful bird chirp, the aroma of a sweet flower. When you return, you will be refreshed and ready to take on whatever the rest of your shift brings.

Small changes really can make a big difference!
