Open enrollment runs May 1 – May 23, 2016
Open enrollment for the Commonwealth of Virginia’s health coverage and flexible spending programs takes place May 1 through May 23, 2016 for the upcoming plan year July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017. The elections made during open enrollment become effective July 1, 2016 and payroll deduction changes (if any) will be reflected beginning with July 15, 2016 paychecks.

Starting tomorrow (Friday), a tutorial for faculty and staff about open enrollment will be available in Blackboard. Log in and search “open enrollment 2016” in the course search under courses and organizations. Details about on-campus meetings, how to make changes, tools for decision-making, and premium rewards will also be available Friday at hr.vcu.edu/benefits.html. Questions? Guidelines for hiring summer workers
Guidelines for hiring summer workers are available at hr.vcu.edu/compensation-and-rewards/summer-workers/. There are two employment options when hiring summer workers:

  1. Student Worker (SW0001): This category is for students who attend high school or college (whether at or outside of VCU); pay is at least $7.25 an hour.
  2. Hourly Worker: This category is for all other summer workers; the position number should correspond to the correct role; pay is at least $8.25 an hour.

Summer workers should be recruited using the eJobs “non-benefited” site.

Important notes:

  • For students who work at VCU, Banner will automatically calculate FICA withholdings based on their enrollment status during each pay period. When students are not taking classes, FICA will be withheld.
  • Regarding the 29-hour work limit state rule, summer (or seasonal) employees may work more than 29 hours per week provided they do not average more than 29 hours per week for the year if/when they return to employment with VCU after the summer.
