Phishing Scams and Schemes Unveiled

Beware a recent phishing email sent across compass claiming “Human Resources Shared Document with you” If you have received this email please select the three dots top right hand corner and report it as phishing.

The attackers attempt to trick us by including names of organizations we are familiar with like, vcu.edu and Microsoft. But a legitimate HR email from VCU would not be sent out in this format. Some red flags that prove this is a phishing email include, the odd wording of the email, notice in the line, You have Recieved 9 pages of Corporate eFax Message From (154787787622) ” . received is spelt incorrectly and there are extra spaces and a random ” character at the end.

If you suspect an email is phishing and notice these red flags please report it to infosec@vcu.edu by forwarding the email to that address. Thank you and remember to use caution approaching an email received from outside of the VCU organization.
