Dear colleagues, VCU establishes its payday and holiday calendar to meet the academic and business needs of the university. VCU’s holiday calendar differs from other state agencies and incorporates the same number of state holidays and additional leave granted by the Governor.

As in years past, VCU will be closed for two full weeks during winter break, which runs from December 23, 2019 – January 3, 2020. During those two weeks, employees will be required to use three days (24 hours) of leave to cover the time away from work.

Employees will be required to take 8 hours of leave on:

  • Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019
  • Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020
  • Friday, Jan. 3, 2020

While this practice may be new for employees who began employment with VCU in recent years, it has historically been required in many years prior. If the Governor grants additional holiday leave, it will reduce the number of leave hours that employees are required to take during the winter break.

Please share this important information with faculty and staff in your area. Encourage employees to work with their manager to use leave between now and January with the winter break leave requirement in mind. If you have questions about leave reporting, please contact VCU Leave Administration at leave@vcu.edu or (804) 828-1712.

As always, thank you for your support and partnership.

All my best, Cathleen C. Burke Assistant Vice President for Human Resources Virginia Commonwealth University
