Dear Colleagues:

Congratulations on joining the Working@VCU: Great Place HR plan! The plan is designed to reward growth and learning, align our everyday work with the university’s strategic mission, and preserve what we appreciate most about state employment.

VCU Human Resources has prepared a variety of resources to support you throughout this change. For specific information about how the new HR plan impacts you, please log in to myVCU and select “HR Redesign” under “Resources.” There, you will learn more about where your job fits within the new university job family structure and access a comparison of the classified HR plan and the new HR plan.

Job families are groups of jobs related by similar work that represent a career path from entry-level positions to senior executives. Your job assignment is based on your current job duties. Your current working title will not change as a result of moving into the new employee group. Learning more about the job families in the new HR plan can help you plan your career development.

One of the new components of the new HR plan is paid university leave. Please note the following:

  • Starting April 15, 2019, the new leave code, called “university leave,” will be available for you to use in VCU RealTime.

  • If leave has already been submitted and approved in VCU RealTime for April 10 (the start of the pay period for which university leave begins) or later, VCU Human Resources will update it to reflect the new university leave code and no action is required on your part.

  • Upon conversion to the University and Academic Professionals employee group, existing annual, VSDP sick, and VSDP family/personal leave balances are credited toward your university leave balance. Employees converting from participation in the Traditional Sick Leave Plan will have their traditional sick leave balance banked separately for future use. To understand how your current leave balances will move into the new HR plan, see “Opting into the new HR plan in the future.”

  • You can check current leave balances in your myVCU portal.

The new HR plan gives you immediate access to the amount of university leave you will accrue through the end of the current calendar year, even though you have yet to technically accrue all of it. Please be reminded that employees who leave employment with VCU must pay back any leave used that was not yet accrued to the university upon separation (see managing leave for more information). VCU Human Resources provides a leave calculator at leavecalculator.vcu.edu to help you keep track of how much leave you have actually accrued.

Thank you for taking the time to become familiar with this information and for your partnership and support. Please contact your HR Professional with questions. This is an exciting time and we are delighted to have you on this journey of making VCU an even greater place to work.

All my best,

Cathleen C. Burke
