Dear Colleagues:

As you know, this semester has been unprecedented in terms of early fall weather emergencies. Thank you for your assistance in managing these events. Several of you have reached out with questions regarding our most recent Monroe Park closing, so we’re sending this message for clarification.

On Friday, October 12, 2018 there was a widespread power outage that impacted much of the Monroe Park campus. Many classes could not be held, critical building systems were down, building access was impacted and network outages were plentiful. In response, the Monroe Park campus was closed and VCU employees working on the Monroe Park campus were instructed not to report to work. Since the campus was closed, VCU employees who work on the Monroe Park campus should receive office closing leave.

The MCV campus and Biotech campus were not impacted by the power outage and were not closed. VCU employees who work on the MCV campus or Biotech campus should have reported to work. We sincerely thank each of them for their role in upholding VCU’s important mission. If MCV campus employees were unable to travel to work due to the conditions experienced throughout the metro Richmond area, university or annual leave can be used. If these employees were able to work from home, managers should not require employees to take leave for the day or a portion of the day they were able to work from home.

We hope this clarifies any confusion. If you have any further questions, please contact leave@vcu.edu or emprel@vcu.edu. Once again, thank you for your assistance. Please extend our appreciation to all of our community members.
