Important reminder about hepatitis B vaccine
VCU follows established Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) laws to ensure safe and healthful working conditions for employees. In support of OSHA regulations, VCU offers the hepatitis B vaccine within 10 days of employment to new employees who have contact with human blood and/or body fluids as part of their job. Likewise, VCU offers the vaccine within 10 days of a job change if an employee is likely to experience similar occupational risks. Providing employees with personal protective equipment (such as gloves, gowns, eye protection or goggles) does not relieve VCU of OSHA’s requirement to offer the vaccine.

To ensure VCU meets this obligation, it is critical that supervisors assess job duties for potential routine blood-borne exposure and report employees holding these positions to VCU Employee Health Services as soon as possible. Please note: departments are charged for vaccinations. There is no cost to the employee. VCU Employee Health Services documents the employee’s acceptance or refusal. As a reminder, any employee who has direct or indirect patient contact must have a preplacement assessment from VCU Employee Health Services. Questions? Contact Employee Health Services at (804) 828-0584, your HR Consultant or the VCU Workers’ Compensation Office at (804) 828-1533.

Thank you for your support in complying with this important law.
