VCU Libraries recently acquired new online materials featuring game architecture, the complete Wall Street Journal archive, transcripts of European and American witch trials, and much more. Animation Practice Collection: A collection of resources on animation from pre-production to post-production.
Applied Gaming Collection: Material for study and research across the gaming field, including audio programming, game physics, game architecture, and user research.
Art & Architecture Source: Database of full-text articles, detailed indexing, and abstracts covering various arts-related subjects from antiques to video art. An expansion of Art-Full Text.
City and Business Directories: Virginia, 1801-1929: Provides historical, personal, and professional information about the inhabitants of a city and information about the city’s civic, social, benevolent and other organizations. Includes information such as addresses, city and county officers, heads of families, firms and names of those doing business in the city, lists of residents, occupations, and street directories.
Civil War in Words and Deeds: First-person accounts from the postwar period and early 20th century documenting army life and battle experiences during the American Civil War.
Confederate Newspapers: A Collection from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and Alabama: Newspapers reflecting public opinion in the South during the American Civil War.
Design Studies Collection: Collection of resources across design research, product design, interior design, sustainability, and marketing.
Early Encounters in North America: Peoples, Culture, and the Environment: Personal accounts from 1534-1850, including narratives, diaries, journals, and letters, by native peoples, slaves, traders, officials, missionaries, explorers, and soldiers.
Gale Digital Scholar Lab: Allows users to explore VCU Libraries’ Gale primary resources using digital humanities tools. Users need to create an account via Google or Microsoft to authenticate and save content. Click on the Create Account option to get started. Click herefor additional information on using the Lab.
Making of the Modern World, Parts 1-4: Monographs and periodicals from the Goldsmiths’ Library of Economic Literature at the University of London documenting the influence of economic developments on society from the Middle Ages to the 20th century.
Manuscript Women’s Letters and Diaries from the American Antiquarian Society: Personal writings by American women from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, extensively indexed and presented as high-quality images of the original manuscripts.
Mass Incarceration and Prison Studies: Access to primary and secondary materials from global sources that cover historical and contemporary themes of mass incarceration, confinement, the death penalty, prison identity and culture, and more.
Nineteenth Century Collections Online: Europe and Africa: Additional collection added to this resource. Nineteenth Century Collections Online is a digital archive of primary source collections from the “long” 19th century. Includes monographs, newspapers, manuscripts, diaries, letters, maps, statistics and more. Offers annotation and tagging tools.
North American Indian Thought and Culture: Biographies, autobiographies, personal narratives, speeches, diaries, letters, and oral histories of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Canadian First Peoples.
North American Women’s Letters and Diaries: Diaries, letters, correspondence, and unpublished materials document the personal lives of women from the Colonial period to 1950.
Packt Game Development and Animation Collection: Software-focused collection supporting game design, animation, interactive media, and related fields. Updated annually.
Policy Map: Data and mapping tool that provides access to indicators related to demographics, housing, crime, mortgages and home sales, health, jobs and more. Data is available at common U.S. geographies such as address, block group, Census tract, zip code, county, city, state, and MSA, as well as other geographies such as school districts, watersheds, hospital referral regions, and political boundaries. Users can download data for use in other tools, generate on-the-fly reports and upload additional data for comparison.
Security Issues Online: Access to primary and secondary materials covering conflicts, policies, and relationships that have impacted the global arena throughout modern history. Covers themes such as terrorism and counterterrorism, insurgency and counterinsurgency, cybersecurity, ethnic conflicts and resolution, nuclear threats, and more.
Shakespeare Collection: Includes the First Folio and Quartos, prompt books from the 17th century to the 20th century, and editions and adaptations of Shakespeare’s works.
Vault: Career intelligence and exploration resources, including company rankings, employer profiles, employee reviews, internships, guidebooks, and articles across a wide range of industries.
Wall Street Journal Archive (1889-2011): Extends coverage of the Libraries’ Wall Street Journal subscription to provide the full run of the newspaper. The Wall Street Journal is a national daily newspaper that provides access to news, commentary and analysis with an emphasis on business and financial news.
Witchcraft in Europe and America: Comprehensive collection on witchcraft from the 15th to the 20th centuries, including anti-persecution writings, legal and religious documents, and transcripts of trials and exorcisms.
