In remote teaching and learning, explore thousands of free films and streaming media
VCU Libraries subscribes to and licenses streaming media across academic disciplines to enhance and expedite online learning and instruction. These resources, accessed remotely by all in the VCU community through the university login, can be especially useful now, when classes are being taught remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic. Once logged in, streaming media from VCU Libraries will be accessible from any device.
This list describes the content of each streaming resource.
American History in Video: Thousands of videos for the study of American history, with contemporaneous video footage from the 1890s to the 1980s as well as historical documentaries from leading video producers.
Bates’ Visual Guide to Physical Examination: Videos of head-to-toe and systems-based physical examination techniques for clinicians. The site features over eight hours of video content.
Black Studies in Video: Documentaries, interviews, and archival footage covering African American history, politics, art and culture, family structure, gender relationships, and social and economic issues.
Counseling and Therapy in Video: Rich collection of video for the study of counseling, social work, psychotherapy, and psychiatric counseling. Features therapy sessions, case consultations, lectures, and interviews, as well as teaching and discussion guides.
Digital Theatre+: A platform for the performing arts providing students with access to full-length productions, interviews, texts, rehearsals, and other educational resources.
Education in Video: Teaching demonstrations, lectures, documentaries, and primary source footage of students and teachers in actual classrooms. Covers hundreds of special topics and themes.
Ethnographic Video Online: Hundreds of classic and contemporary documentaries on the study of human culture and behavior covering every region of the world.
Filmakers Library Online: Award-winning documentaries and independent films presenting points of view and historical and current experiences from diverse cultures and traditions worldwide.
Films on Demand Master Academic Collection: Thousands of streaming films covering core academic subjects. Also includes archival films and newsreels.
HistoryMakers: Oral histories of African-Americans from all walks of life, including politicians, authors, civil rights activists, religious leaders, musicians, legal scholars, and many others. Includes video footage.
Jazz Music Library: Comprehensive collection of jazz recordings covering thousands of artists, ensembles, albums, and genres from all over the world from the beginnings of jazz to today.
JoVE: Streaming video resource that includes a peer-reviewed physical and life sciences journal, as well as a science education library. Subjects covered include biology, chemistry, engineering, environmental sciences, medicine, and more.
Kanopy: Streaming documentaries, feature films, shorts, and more. Includes films from The Criterion Collection, California Newsreel, Media Education Foundation, First Run Features, Green Planet Films, Michael Blackwood, Kino Lorber and many more.
Music Online: Provides the most comprehensive database in streaming audio, video, reference, and scores on the web. Integrated searching by ensemble, genre, historical events and more provides in-depth context for music history.
Naxos Music Library: Streaming classical and world music. Includes notes on musical works and biographical information on composers or artists.
Opera in Video: Comprehensive collection of operatic performances, interviews, and documentaries, covering the most commonly studied operas in music history, opera literature, and performance classes.
Oral History Online: Index and links to web-based oral histories in English in archives and libraries around the world, with links to full text, audio, and video when available.
net: Streaming training videos in the fields of psychotherapy, counseling, and addiction treatment.
