Dear VCU Leadership:

I am pleased to share that VCU Human Resources will offer the following professional development opportunities to leaders and managers university-wide. These programs are designed to reinforce the leadership competencies identified in the Great Place: HR Redesign’s new performance management process and are offered at no cost to your school or department.

To ensure managers and leaders have priority access to these opportunities, we have identified the individuals (based on university job titles and roles) eligible to participate. We will communicate details about the availability of the following opportunities via a “Leadership Community” listserv to this target audience in a separate message. Talk with your HR Professional for more information about who in your school or department is eligible to participate. As senior leaders, you are certainly welcome to participate as well.

  • Crucial Conversations is a nationally recognized, highly interactive course that teaches communication skills around high-stakes, emotional, or risky topics – at all levels of an organization.
  • Leading Change is a course developed internally to provide the knowledge, skills, and tools to implement successful change initiatives.
  • Working@VCU: Great Place HR policy training covers specific areas of the new HR policy. Each section starts with an online module and policy overview in Talent@VCU, followed by an in-person session focusing on cases, scenarios, and practical application of the policy.
  • A Leadership Career Community will provide professional development opportunities to both current and future managers and leaders. Career communities are how individuals doing similar work throughout the university can connect regularly to network and share best practices. The first Leadership Career Community will meet later this year.

We all share in our commitment to making VCU a great place to work and we know that people are our greatest resource.  As we demonstrate this commitment with investments in leadership development, we ask for your support in encouraging those you work with to take advantage of these opportunities. As always, I am grateful for your partnership and support.

All my best,
Cathleen C. Burke
