The VCU Technology Services Blog

During day 2 of the 2010 Tech Fair on the MCV campus we had the chance to stop by the Crestron table to visit with Christina Peterson. Technology marches on and this is particularly true for classroom audio visual equipment. Overhead projectors, slide projectors, and now VCR’s are falling by the wayside as new technology springs up to replace them. New technology can sometimes present new problems which for now is the pending switch from analog signals to digital signals for media.

Currently, plugging a laptop into one of VCU’s centrally-scheduled classroom podiums is as simple as connecting a VGA cable from the instructor’s laptop to the podium. In 2013 this changes as the industry switches to digital signals. As if it was not enough to deal with updating the equipment in classrooms, we will have to deal with a new digital rights management scheme called High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection or HDCP. This scheme is already out in the environment now as it is used with Blu-Ray discs, movies downloaded from iTunes, and even used in the chips our computers currently use. Christina gives us a quick overview of HDCP and the challenges it poses for the classroom. Check out the video below or visit the VCUTS YouTube channel.

Thanks to Crestron for supporting the 2010 Tech Fair.
