Over the winter break, W. M. Jordan will start constructing the new restrooms on floors two through four and renovating the 1st floor restrooms.  They will also start “demo-ing” the Northeast corner of the fourth floor (including the conference room) and the north wall of the first floor.

Construction walls are going up to segregate these areas from occupied space. But, visitors will become aware of higher noise levels as work moves inside the building.

Before students return from winter break, crews will demolish what’s necessary on the Northeast corner of floors 1-3 to install a shear wall for structural reinforcement where the new and old buildings will join.  Because the renovation of the first floor restroom and shear wall installation involve the noisy breaking down of block walls and drilling into concrete for dowels, W. M. Jordan is taking advantage of the winter break when there are few students and staff in the building.

The schedule for completion of the restrooms is:

  • First floor: Temporary walls now up; completion by March 20.
  • Second floor: Temporary construction walls installed Dec. 28Jan. 6; completion by April 10. (Note that temporary walls are already being installed as of today.)
  • Third floor: Temporary construction walls Dec. 22 – Dec. 24; completion by April 17.
  • Fourth floor: Temporary walls Jan. 5-9; completion by May 8.

To make way for the restroom construction, some staff workspaces in Rm. 230 have been reconfigured, and three librarians have moved to temporary offices from the first floor.

Special Collections is moving its collection to the new compact shelving.  Staff have already moved to their new offices.  The old compact shelving will be moved to 500 Academic Centre before the start of the spring semester, thus vacating Special Collections’ current space completely for construction to begin in that space.

Regarding the new building construction, W. M. Jordan plans to pour concrete for the third floor on Dec. 31 (west side) and Jan. 12 (east side), but they may beat this date and pour sooner. Typically, these concrete pours take place in the wee hours — after midnight into mid-morning.

The schedule calls for the new building entrance to be ready for use by the start of the fall semester with completion of the entire project in December 2015.
