Open Ed Resouces: VIVA publishes community and public nursing foundational text

VIVA has published a new Open Educational Resource that was initiated two years ago in an experimental creation process designed to more efficiently and quickly develop academic resources.
The book, Community and Public Health Nursing: A Call to Action was authored by eight people, including VCU Libraries liaison to the VCU School of Nursing Roy Brown. Brown is a Research Education Librarian with the Health Sciences Library.
The book is an introduction to the diverse roles of community and public health nurses through a social justice lens. Students will gain the fundamental knowledge and skills to work with community members and other stakeholders to promote health and wellbeing and to prevent disease. This textbook examines key issues such as health disparities, access to care, cultural competence, and the impact of social determinants on public health outcomes. Students will gain knowledge, practical skills, and insight into how nurses can improve community health, advocate for health-related policies, and promote health equity at the individual through systemic levels.
The book is accompanied by a comprehensive Instructor’s Guide offering practical teaching strategies and exercisess. The open textbook is available as a Pressbook, PDF, and ePub, with a print version to be
available soon. The ebook is at https://doi.org/10.60865/CPHN1381
