Writing: A tool for mathematical thinking
Writing in math classrooms plays a crucial role in helping students articulate their thought processes, communicate ideas effectively, and reflect on their learning. The 2023 Virginia Standards of Learning for Mathematics (Virginia Department of Education, 2023) emphasize the importance of critical thinking, problem-solving, and the application of mathematical concepts. By integrating writing into math instruction, educators can foster deeper understanding and enhance students’ critical thinking.
Writing supports deeper conceptual understanding and serves as a tool for thinking (Graham, 2011). When students write about their problem-solving strategies or explain their reasoning, they transform abstract mathematical ideas into concrete expressions. This process solidifies student learning and helps teachers assess student understanding and identify misconceptions. Writing empowers students to take ownership of their mathematical thinking and builds a strong foundation for meaningful classroom discourse (Gunter, 2023). Students who practice expressing their mathematical ideas in writing learn to articulate their reasoning more clearly, enhancing their academic performance and ability to engage in collaborative problem-solving (Altieri, 2009). Additionally, writing develops metacognitive skills. Journaling or writing reflective prompts encourage students to monitor their understanding, recognize areas of difficulty, and plan their next steps. For example, simple strategies like the, “I used to think… but now I know…” prompt can help students become more aware of their learning progress (Gunter, 2023). Low-pressure tasks such as Two-Minute Papers or “Muddiest Point” reflections can help students ease into writing-to-understand. These short prompts ask students to summarize what they have learned or to identify areas of confusion, providing teachers with valuable formative assessment data (Keely & Tobey, 2011).
Journaling can be an effective way to track learning over time. Math journals allow students to document their thought processes, reflect on challenging problems, and develop personal problem-solving strategies. Journals can serve as a resource for students to revisit concepts and ideas they may need to reinforce.
Another engaging activity is problem creation. Asking students to design their math problems encourages creativity and a deeper understanding of problem structure. For instance, students can work collaboratively to identify characteristics of “good” and “bad” math problems and then use this understanding to create their assessments (Keeley & Tobey, 2011). Collaborative writing projects, such as co-authoring math storybooks or drafting problem solutions as a group, are also valuable for fostering peer interaction and refining mathematical communication skills.
Writing in mathematics is more than just a supplementary activity; it is a powerful instructional tool that enhances learning, communication, and critical thinking. By thoughtfully incorporating writing into math lessons, teachers can help students engage more deeply with mathematical concepts, reflect on their learning, and communicate their ideas effectively. This approach benefits students academically and prepares them for success in a world where communication and problem-solving are essential skills.
