As the academic year wraps up, construction noise will be minimal, as VCU Libraries supports students in their final studies and papers. Over the next few weeks, we can expect the start of what will be the “Summer of Noise”:

  • May 12 – demolition of sidewalk to Cathedral St., so it can be re-poured thicker on May 13-14 to hold the weight of dump trucks.
  • May 12 – start of demolition of the atrium which includes sawing the connection between the atrium and JBC proper, demo of the structure on May 15, removal of wall panels on May 20, and excavation and removal of the footings (May 27 – 30).
  • May 12 – start of saw cutting of the “pit” retaining wall.  To prepare for this work the trees and shrubs around the “pit” will be removed on May 12.
  • May 12 – drilling of dowels and other related noisy work over the succeeding few days for the area way on the west side.
  • May 19 – Start of a seven week project to jack hammer the plinth, so it can be replaced with granite pavers to match the new 1st floor entrance and lobby floor. The work will be done counter clockwise starting at the NW corner of Cabell, proceeding south along three sides of JBC.

Other important notes:

  • Linden Street will close for three days, starting May 6, to install a storm water structure.
  • No cooling in Starbucks from May 12 – 19 and no cooling in the basement from May 19 – 27.
  • Last but not least, parking in the “pit” ceases permanently on May 12.  Deliveries to the loading dock can be made until the 1st of June.
