Collections librarian elected to national post in engineering education
Engineering and Science Collections Librarian Ibironke Lawal has been elected Director of the Engineering Library Division of the American Society for Engineering Education for the 2022-2023 term of office.
Directors are two of the five members of the ELD’s Executive Committee. Directors help establish and support policies and an overall direction for the division. They infuse new ideas, keep the division on a positive track,and work to ensure the vitality of the organization. In addition, directors serve as members of the ELD’s Development Committee.
Lawal’s journey with the ASEE/ELD started in 2001 in Albuquerque. Since then, she has missed only one conference and that was due to the SARS outbreak in Canada. She enjoys the professional connections and camaraderie within the ELD.
She has participated in numerous activities, including presenting papers and posters, moderating technical sessions, serving on the Development Committee, serving as a reviewer for the Collaborative Network for Engineering and Computing Diversity Conference (CoNECD) papers in 2018 and 2019, and representing the ELD for an Interdivisional Town Hall on “Why is Change So Difficult to Sustain in Engineering Education?” She was awarded the ELD Best Publication Award for 2003 for her paper “Scholarly Communication: The Use and Non-Use of E-Print Archives for the Dissemination of Scientific Information,” Issues in Science & Technology Librarianship 36 Fall (2002).
“Ronke’s election to this role within the American Society for Engineering Education is an example of the contributions VCU librarians make on a national level in advancing the role of the library as an integral part of higher education,” said Tammy Sugarman, associate dean for collections, discovery and budget. “It is a testament to Ronke’s numerous contributions to engineering librarianship that she has been recognized as a leader of the Engineering Library Division.”
