Each year, the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) recognizes exceptional adjunct faculty across its global units (stateside, Asia and Europe) through the UMGC Outstanding Faculty Designation. This honor celebrates faculty who demonstrate excellence in teaching and student engagement.

VCU Libraries’ Associate Dean for Collections, Discovery and Budget Tammy Sugarman received this designation in 2025-2026. She was honored for excellence in teaching and student engagement for LIBS150, an introduction to research skills for undergraduates. Sugarman has taught this class for 20 years.

The award is made to those faculty who score in the top 10 percent in three categories on student evaluations:

  • The instructor for this course provided effective feedback that helped me improve;
  • The instructor for this course was available and responsive;
  • The instructor for this course helped me to understand the course content.

Awardees receive a one-time payment and priority staffing as part of this recognition.
