Showing February evenings (4-8 p.m.)

As the new superhero movie Black Panther opens this week, VCU  VCULibraries’ Cabell Screeen considers some African-American artists, writers and characters that have laid the foundation for this moment. “Black Heroes, Black Artists” includes a number of rare and interesting items from VCU Libraries Comic Arts Collection, including:

  • All-Negro Comics (1947) – the first known comic book written and drawn solely by African American writers and artists
  • The Adventures of Black Eldridge – published in 1970 by Marcus Books of San Francisco, the nation’s oldest black bookstore
  • Milestone Comics – founded in 1993 to address the underrepresentation of minorities in American comics
  • Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline – which has been included in the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.

If you want to see more, you’ll find early Black Panther comic books, including T’Challa’s first appearance in Marvel’s Fantastic Four, No. 52 (July 1966), online at VCU Libraries Flickr.
