Black Heroes, Black Artists: Comic Arts Collection selections
Showing February evenings (4-8 p.m.)
As the new superhero movie Black Panther opens this week, VCU VCULibraries’ Cabell Screeen considers some African-American artists, writers and characters that have laid the foundation for this moment. “Black Heroes, Black Artists” includes a number of rare and interesting items from VCU Libraries Comic Arts Collection, including:
- All-Negro Comics (1947) – the first known comic book written and drawn solely by African American writers and artists
- The Adventures of Black Eldridge – published in 1970 by Marcus Books of San Francisco, the nation’s oldest black bookstore
- Milestone Comics – founded in 1993 to address the underrepresentation of minorities in American comics
- Brotherman: Dictator of Discipline – which has been included in the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC.
