Stephen Alcorn is a professor with VCUarts Communication Arts department. “Out of Africa,” his latest exhibit on the Cabell screen, explores the artistic mastery of the Ife and Benin cultures.
Alcorn had this to say about his work, “The focus of this digital exhibit is the series of Kingdoms of Ife and Benin-inspired master copies I created in the form of distance-learning demos over the course of the spring edition of my 400-level elective course, Mastering the Masters. Although this course Mastering the Masters begins each semester with a probing and meaningful study of seminal European master draftsmen, it culminates with an exploration and celebration of cultures and civilizations that, like those of Ife and Benin, are less familiar to the majority of my students. This approach has proven to be at once revelatory, heartening, and immensely rewarding as my students achieve a greater awareness of their particular cultural heritage and its beauty.”
