2019 Pattern Project challenges students
The Pattern Project began as an annual Interior Design project challenging students to explore craft, material, concept, color, place and time. It has grown to be a transdisciplinary color-focused project called Tutto Bianco involving VCUarts students from Painting + Printmaking, Fashion, Interior Design, and Sculpture. Now in its fifth year The Pattern Project continues to evolve.
Showing now on the Cabell Screen are some of the patterns students created.
Students study the details of what inspires them, analyzing geometry, color, proportion, material and symbolism of the materials. They delve into the themes they are drawn to like power, wealth, justice, home, struggle and peace, which provides broader insight into the origins and uses of pattern, specifically in the built environment. Students learn the craft of pattern or mark-making through traditional and modern techniques (hand-based and digital techniques) stenciling, block printing, laser cutting, dyeing, Photoshop, InDesign, watercolor and sketching. The pattern they are designing will be incorporated into a built environment – specifically as a textile, wallcovering, or screening device.
