Driven by VCU Convergence, interdisciplinary team takes aim at neurodegeneration
On April 29, an interdisciplinary group of researchers, clinicians and faculty gathered for the first planning meeting toward what could become a landmark effort in neurodegeneration research and clinical care. Bringing together participants from the College of Health Professions, School of Medicine, School of Nursing and School of Pharmacy, the session marked the beginning of a collaborative push to position VCU as a national leader in understanding and addressing neurodegenerative diseases.
The meeting was the first step in planning a Center grant submission focused on neurodegeneration, a key area within the VCU Convergence Neuroscience theme.

By the session conclusion, the group had developed concrete next steps, including plans to conduct preliminary research this summer and reconvene in the fall to build on that work.
“The time is now for us to collectively build on the immense progress of our neurodegeneration scientists, VCU Richmond Brain Health Initiative, and VCU Health Guide program to continue to innovate and support individuals and families managing brain health and dementia locally and nationally.”
– Faika Zanjani, Ph.D.
The planning meeting reflects the core mission of VCU Convergence, which brings together faculty, students and community partners across disciplines to tackle complex, real-world problems. Neurodegenerative diseases, shaped by biological, behavioral, social and environmental factors, are precisely the kind of challenge the initiative was designed to address.
