๐ง Long Bridge Rail Project Underway: What University Travelers Need to Know
Major construction officially began on January 12, 2026, for the Long Bridge rail project over the Potomac River. This important infrastructure upgrade is expected to continue through 2030 โ and it will temporarily impact Amtrak service along this busy corridor.
๐ Daily Bridge Closures
Throughout construction, all northbound and southbound Amtrak trains traveling across the bridge will be affected by daily closures between 8:15 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Travelers should expect schedule adjustments during these hours.
๐ Changes to Amtrak Virginia Service
To accommodate construction, Amtrak Virginia has temporarily reduced its scheduled service. This includes:
- The suspension of one daily round-trip between
Richmond Staples Mill Road Station (RVR) and
Washington, DC
Updated schedules are reflected in CTP. Depending on your route and time of travel, you may also encounter Amtrak bus transportation connections at
Alexandria Station.
๐ Tip: Be sure to review train details carefully when booking to confirm whether a bus connection is included.
๐ Alternative Transportation Options
If these rail adjustments affect your university travel plans, consider alternative options such as:
- Enterprise Rent-A-Car / National Car Rental
- Hertz
These contracted vendors may provide greater flexibility during the construction period.
