Art Conservation is a field that combines the hand skills of studio art, the contextual knowledge of art history and the scientific understanding of materials to care for and prolong the life of cultural heritage.

VCU Libraries, in partnership with the Virginia Conservation Association, will host a session focused on “Early Career Professionals in Art Conservation” on Jan. 22, 4-7 pm. There will be an open house of Collections Care in room 231 from 4-5, p.m. followed by light refreshments in Room 250 with presentations from 6-7 p.m. The event is free and open to anyone interested, particularly current students or library professionals interested in conservation.

The early career timeframe refers to conservation experience gained before attending graduate school through five years post-graduate. Speakers at this event will be young professionals who will discuss their research, recent conservation treatments and their path to conservation.
