Five Questions: Minuet Curry
Minuet Curry is 2024-2025 student editor for VCU Libraries’ Jurgen Comics Contest. An Arts Foundation student, Curry brings many interests and talents to the project, promoting the contest, organizing entries and sharing the complex story of art censorship with other VCU students.
Why did this job as student editor of the comics contest interest you?
I was at first interested in this position because I love comics and didn’t know much about VCU, Cabell or the contest. As I looked more into it and saw how the contest spoke about and brought attention to censorship–something I have looked into before and feel strongly about–I wanted to be a part of it. I also thought it’d be a good job to gain experience for future endeavors.
This year’s Jurgen Comics Contest looks at specific times when art was censored and asks students to create comic book covers that tell these stories. What makes drawing a comic book cover particularly challenging?
Having a single page to imply a whole story is a challenge. You have to incorporate a lot of elements like characters, the setting, the conflict etc, all while making things not look too cluttered or boring and simple. Trying to communicate all of that can be difficult.
How has VCU Libraries helped you in your studies?/How do you use the library?
The library has been a great place for me to get work done, especially in between classes. It is also generally just a good place to chill and they have very good resources (a lot of which I need to utilize more). Also Starbucks is cool.
Name 3 things you like to do in your free time.
I love to draw, and when I have the time (which I don’t), animate. I’m currently working on a small pixel art game for the first time, so that’s a new hobby I like. Right now it’s just for fun, but I’d like to work on bigger things someday.
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
Um, I would probably go to Japan, specifically Tokyo, even if that’s a basic answer lol. I’d want to go see the general “nerd” stuff, like the Studio Ghibli museum, the Sanrio store, and look at some cool street fashion, maybe find some less well known cool spots. Also to try the food.
