The 2019 Friends of VCU Libraries Book Sale was the most successful sale yet! The six-day sale brought in over $24,200 in sales, $1,200 in cash donations from 828 customers and $7,000 in sponsorships for a combined total of $32,501.42. With books donated from over 80 individuals in the Richmond area, the sale brought in around 3,000 shoppers ready to re-home the donated books.

Beginning a few days before the sale opened, VCU’s Emerging Leaders Program set out the stock in a record time and kept the sale room neat and tidy at all times during the sale. Library staff received numerous compliments on the helpfulness of the students, many who helped customers load cars with large boxes of heavy books. In addition to spending many hours over the year in advance of the sale sorting donated books into categories, Friends of VCU Libraries board members and community volunteers filled shifts throughout the sale and assisted with maintaining order in a constantly shifting environment. A small group of board and community volunteers worked long days in the lead up to the sale special pricing some of the more valuable and collectible books, comics and materials.

In the weeks following the closing of the sale, staff and volunteers will review procedures and start making plans for the 2020 sale.

With the exception of the month of October, VCU Libraries is happy to accept donations of books through appointment at our loading dock. If you have books that you wish to donate, please contact Antonia FD Vassar at (804) 827-1165 or vassaram@vcu.edu.
