Put Some Tech in Your T&L

2/12/13 Update:
We have installed the patch that Blackboard (vendor) support engineers provided that should fix the cause of this issue. Now that the patch has been installed instructors should be able to copy courses and/or course content from course to course following the usual steps: http://www.ts.vcu.edu/askit/blackboard/4743.html. For the remainder of the 2013 Spring semester, existing course content that has broken links can either be removed and re-added, or removed and copied.

2/8/13 Update:
Blackboard (vendor) support engineers have provided a patch that should fix the cause of this issue in future courses or content. We plan to install this patch on production on Tuesday, Feb. 13th. For the remainder of the 2013 Spring semester, existing course content with broken links, will still need to be re-added to courses by the instructors.

2/6/13 Update:
Blackboard (vendor) support engineers are still working with us continuously to troubleshooting and find a fix for these issues. Meanwhile, please contact the Technology Services helpIT Center at 828-2227 or help@vcu.edu; or email blackboard@vcu.edu for assistance.

1/31/13 Update:
Blackboard (vendor) support engineers are still troubleshooting this issue and attempting to find a temporary fix. We will continue working with the vendor until this issue is satisfactorily resolved. Meanwhile, for any course file links that are not working for students, instructors will need to manually re-link those content files to the proper file location. Please contact the Technology Services helpIT Center at 828-2227 or help@vcu.edu; or email blackboard@vcu.edu for assistance.

1/28/13 Update:
We have determined that the problem occurs when courses are copied from previous semesters, some content files maintain links back to the course they were copied from, rather than copying the files to the current course. Therefore, Spring 2013 students do not have permissions to view those files since they reside in a previous semester’s course.

Blackboard support engineers do not have a fix for this known issue and have suggested that instructors manually upload each of their content files so that they are in the current course and have proper links. We realize this is an unreasonable workaround, so we are continuing to pursue this problem with the vendor. Meanwhile, we are addressing these issues on a case-by case basis to determine if there is a workaround that we can implement to correct the problem for the current semester.

We appreciate your patience, as we work to find a suitable, permanent resolution to this issue.

1/25/13 Update:
After extensive troubleshooting we have a determined a possible workaround to correct the issue. We are reviewing this workaround further and will be coordinating with the instructors who’s courses have been impacted by the issue before proceeding. We hope to begin implementing the workaround on Monday.

It has come to our attention that due to a recently identified issue in Blackboard, students may be unable to view and open files in a course if that course has been copied from a previous semester. The instructor can view the files successfully, but the student cannot. The Blackboard team is currently working with the vendor to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience as we work through this problem.
