Dr. David Sarrett

I was invited to participate in a panel discussion entitled “Bridging Gaps Between Dental Standards Development and Industry which was organized by the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products (SCDP) (http://www.ada.org/280.aspx) and the Dental Trade Alliance (DTA) (http://www.dentaltradealliance.org/). This event was part of the annual meeting of the ADA SCDP.  The SCDP is the national group which develops standards for dental products and participates in the International Standards Organization to publish manufacturing standards.  With me on the panel were Napoleon Monroe (DTA and formerly with Henry Schein), Scott Erickson (SCDP member representing the DTA and from 3M ESPE Dental Products), Mike DiBello (DTA and Henry Schein), Greg Zeller (ADA Division of Science), Shannon Mills (SCDP past Chairman and Delta Dental), and Ken Anusavice (SCDP past Chairman and University of Florida).  The session was moderated by Jeff Zawada (current SCDP Chairman from A-dec) and Sharon Stanford (SCDP Secretary from the ADA).  Standards development work is not well known but extremely important to insure we have the best products to use and to permit manufacturers to market their products globally.  Have you ever thought about why any USB plug will plug into any USB port?  People have to agree internationally on such things.  Not always easy.

Sorry if I missed having a photo.  If you have photos of other presenters please send them to me and I can add them to this post.

Dental and Dental Hygiene Students Participate in MCV Campus Annual Health Fair at Richmond’s Armstrong High School

On Saturday March 3, the MCV Student Government hosted its annual MCV Campus Student Health Fair at Armstrong High School.   The fair enjoyed broad participation by all the VCU health sciences programs and was supported by many health care organizations.  Our dental students performed dental exams, provided oral health education, and gave attendees oral hygiene products.  As you can see we had a great turnout of dental and dental hygiene students.  Thanks go to Drs. Goolsby and Vahdani for providing faculty supervision for the great community program. I enjoyed spending time with our students and faculty and talking with the attendees at this event.

Cosby High School Health Sciences Specialty Center Students Visit School of Dentistry

Student enrolled in the Cosby High School Health Sciences Specialty center had fun and learned about dentistry and dental school.  The students learned about carving and waxing teeth, restorative dentistry using our virtual reality DentSim system, and impression making.  The health-sciences program is directed by Shelly Schuetz (pictured with Dr. Ellen Byrne and Dr. Leibowitz) from Cosby High School and is supported by faculty from VCU.  I had the pleasure to attend their graduate recognition ceremony last May and meet many talented students and faculty members.  Thanks to Dr. Michael Healy, Associate Dean for Admissions and International Affairs (pictured directing the DentSim sessions), Dr. Byrne, Senior Associate Dean, and Dr. Leibowitz, Director of Pre-health Advising for VCU for making this a successful community collaboration.

US Court of Appeals Upholds Decision on Professional Behavior

The United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit affirmed a lower court’s decision that professional behavior is important to evaluate.  A quote from the court’s opinion states “As discussed above, we find that the requirement that students demonstrate professional behavior is an essential aspect of Wake Forest’s Doctor of Medicine program.”  This opinion has important consequences for all health sciences educational programs.  The link is to the full court opinion.

Social Media Deal-of-the-Day and Health Care

In the February 2012 ASDA News I found this article very interesting.  “A gift and curse: Groupon and other social deals.”  The article discusses the potential legal and ethical problems dentists may suffer by offering dental care deals using this advertising media. The ADA also sent its members a letter recently warning that use of such methods to entice patients to your practice could be considered fee-splitting or gifting. Fee-splitting and offering gifts to coerce patients are prohibited by laws and regulations.
