Image: Afro Abe Date: 2008-2012 Description: series of 44, five-dollar bill and thread

Showing beginning Oct. 10. Selected works by award-winning VCUArts faculty member Sonya Clark.

Sonya Clark has served as chair of the Department of Craft and Material Studies since 2006. Her work as a textile artist ranges from intimate sculptural pieces that can be worn on the body to installations and interactive performances. With a firm grounding in craft that is expressed in fine detail and a celebration of materials both traditional (beading) and non-traditional (human hair), she engages with the concepts of identity and race. Personal and universal themes including perceptions of beauty, family, community, politics and history are woven into work that has earned Clark many awards and accolades, including most recently the Distinguished Scholarship Award during the 34th VCU Annual VCU Faculty Convocation.
