At VCU we are committed to service and the advancement of humanity. And, at times we must work together to right injustices that were committed in the past to members of humanity who did not have a voice.

On Nov. 25 at 1:00 p.m. we will welcome and honor the ancestral remains of the souls unearthed from an abandoned well on East Marshall Street during construction on the VCU Health campus in 1994.

All members of VCU, VCU Health and the community are welcome to participate.

This is part of our ongoing work to acknowledge and honor these individuals who were not afforded respect during their lifetimes. I am thankful to the Family Representative Council, planning committee and implementation committee for their rigorous and emotionally taxing work. A wise and wonderfully humane group, their efforts to bring the individuals we are honoring to a place of peace and justice are exemplary.

In partnership with the Virginia Department of Historical Resources, VCU researchers and students will continue their work to learn more about the ancestors we are honoring Monday. Their efforts to discover their identities is tireless and I am grateful for their continued persistence over the decades.

May we continue to work in harmony together in our collective effort to do the right thing.
