The world lost an influential and inspirational voice in Maya Angelou, who died today.

The Associated Press called her a Renaissance woman in her obituary published today in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, noting her literary success as well as singing, acting, dancing and teaching. The story of her life and the writings she has bestowed upon us teach us to push our own limits, to be humanitarians and to celebrate diversity — all values we share at Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1995, Maya Angelou honored our graduating class at Commencement, calling them the “rainbow of the future” and encouraging them to remember their humanity and compassion for others as they enter the world.

At VCU, we take comfort in knowing that her words live on.
