Four VCU School of Pharmacy alumni received statewide awards during the Virginia Pharmacists Association’s 135th Annual Convention Sept. 9-11 in Virginia Beach.

SOP alumni recognized during the annual awards program and banquet were:

Beverlee Arnold (B.S. ’82): Ed D. Spearbeck Virginia Pharmacists Service Award
R. Michael Berryman (B.S. ’63): Addington Medal for Excellence in Independent Community Pharmacy
Sarah Melton (B.S. ’91, Pharm.D. ‘94): Cardinal Health Generation Rx Champions Award
Alex Wiatt (B.S. ’73): Pfizer Bowl of Hygeia Award

In addition, Pharm.D. student Adrienne Simmons received the second Harvey B. Morgan Award for Advancing Health Policy. The award, made by the VPhA Foundation Morgan Institute Fund, includes $1,000, a plaque and a stipend for the VPhA annual convention registration and accommodations.

And Team VCU — Pharm.D. students Alli Baumgartner, Philip Cerreto, Jordan McEwen and Jeff McKenzie – took first place in the 2016 NASPA/NMA Student Pharmacist Self-Care Championship. VCU was pitted in the “Jeopardy!”-like competition against teams representing each of the other three Virginia pharmacy schools: Appalachian College of Pharmacy, Hampton University School of Pharmacy and Shenandoah University School of Pharmacy.

Alumnus Johnny Moore (B.S. ’71) is VPhA’s 2016-17 president, and Sam Silek (B.S. ’83) will serve as secretary-treasurer. SOP faculty member Sharon Gatewood (Pharm.D. ’02) is 2016-17 director of Region F, and David Nowinski (Pharm.D. ’14) is director of Region G.

School of Pharmacy alumni who participated in the 2016 VPhA convention program were Gaynell Smith-Gray (B.S. ’82), who helmed the Addington Vision Lecture Series, “Importance of CMRs in Star Ratings”; S. Chris Jones (B.S. ’82) on “Understanding the Legislative Process in Virginia”; Dennis Stanley (B.S. ’74), who provided an “Immunization Update”; Lauren Caldas (Pharm.D. ’11) on “Top 10 Things to Know Before Becoming a Pharmacist-in-Charge”; and Mark Johnson (B.S. ’87, Pharm.D. ’93 ), who offered a “2016 New Drug Update.” Caroline Juran (B.S. ’95) offered a “Board of Pharmacy Update,” and Moore and Tehra James (Pharm.D. ’14) assisted in a presentation on “Pharmacy Robberies & Burglaries Part 1: How to Prepare.” SOP faculty member Laura Morgan discussed “Updates in Pain Management.”
