A round of applause goes to Service Award recipients
It’s that time of year again: the time where VCU applauds and thanks its long-term employees for their service to the university. The 45th annual Service Awards Ceremony and Reception for faculty and staff with five to 55 years of service (in five-year increments) takes place 3-5 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Siegel Center, 1200 W. Broad St.
In addition to celebrating a collective 240 years of service to the university by School of Pharmacy employees, the school congratulates building manager Scott Crenshaw on having been nominated for the 2016 President’s Award for Service Excellence. “This award recognizes the highest level of customer service at the university,” writes VCU President Michael Rao. “I am pleased that our peers have acknowledged your accomplishments and contributions in so positive a manner.” Winners of the President’s Award for Service Excellence, the Award of Excellence and Outstanding Achievement will be announced during the Service Awards Ceremony and Reception.
For those who wish to attend the ceremony, shuttles will be available from the MCV Campus to the Siegel Center and back between 1:15 and 5:15 p.m., leaving from Sanger Hall and the N Deck.
Georgia Kelly, finance administrative assistant for the Office of Finance and Administration, takes honors as the School of Pharmacy’s 2016 longest-running university employee. A housewife, mom and student, Kelly entered the work force in 1981 as an employee of University Purchasing. Five years later, she moved into VCU Human Resources. In 2000, she found a new home at the School of Pharmacy, initially serving as human resources assistant to Regina Scott, who helmed the business office.
In the years since, Kelly’s job has incorporated the fiscal side, as well. Now, under the direction of Victoria Savoy, assistant dean for finance and administration, she is transitioning more toward human resources again. (“I’m very excited!” notes SOP human resources administrator Anna McLemore.)
In her 35 years at VCU, Kelly says the biggest changes she has seen involve technology and automation. “It the beginning, we did everything manually,” she recalls. “With new technology, on every job we saw new systems and procedures.”
Perhaps the most important thing to know about her tenure at the university is that Kelly has enjoyed her work here. “I had to enjoy it to stay this long!” she says with a smile.
As an employee with more than 25 years of service, she will receive a “milestone gift,” a limited-edition stoneware ram created by VCU alumnus artist Maja Bality.
