Today’s post addresses a SON IT frequently asked question: “How can I add someone to my Blackboard course?”.  Students are moved in and out of courses automagically based on their Banner status, but adding an unenrolled user is a manual process that involves locating that user on Blackboard and assigning a role.

Adding the User

  1. Go to Control Panel > Users and Groups > Users
  2. Click Find Users to Enroll

Option 1:  I know the person’s eID (first part of the email address excluding @vcu.edu)

  1. Enter the eID in the Username box. DO NOT click Browse.
  2. Click the drop-down menu to select the preferred role
  3. Click Submit

Option 2:  I do NOT know the person’s eID

  1. Do not enter anything in the Username box
  2. Click Browse
  3. Enter your search criteria (note that you can search by username, first name, last name or email)
  4. Select your operator (contains, equal to, starts with)
  5. Click Go
  6. Check the box associated with the user you want to enroll and click Submit.  This will add the eID to the Username box.
  7. Click the drop-down menu to select the preferred role
  8. Click Submit

Blackboard Roles

Course Builder: Has access to most areas of a course even when it is unavailable to students. Is restricted from accessing the gradebook.
Grader: Can assist with creation, management, delivery, and grading of assessments and surveys. Is unable to access the course when it is unavailable to students.
Teaching Assistant: Has access to most areas of the course and can access it when it is unavailable to students.

Troubleshooting Tip

If you get an error message that begins, “You do not have permission to enroll user…” it is because you entered the eID in the username box then clicked the Browse button and entered the eID again. VCU Learning Systems has provided documentation and the resolution for this issue.
