Did you ever see a particular movie or tv show and think, “Boy, that was a great example of an end of life conversation. I wish I had that for class.” Well, you can add clips from Kanopy in your lectures, online classes, or even in your assessments.

We’ve posted before about the Kanopy Streaming Service available through VCU Libraries, but using clips in an assessment was a completely different use of the platform. Dr. Shelly Smith has used the documentary “The Invisible Patients” available on Kanopy for a number of semesters, as it is a great film about an NP working in primary care. She inquired about the possibility of using some of the clips from the movie as the basis for questions in a Blackboard assessment. Here’s how we did it!

  • First, log in to VCU Kanopy and create an account with your VCU email.
  • Next, browse films by subject or search for a specific title. If you search for “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” to find a clip, you won’t find that film, but you will find other movies that deal with the poor treatment of people with mental illness in the 60’s and 70’s.
  • After you find your movie…make some clips. You can make a playlist with a number of different clips or make many playlists with only one clip on each. We chose the latter because you can use the embed code only for a whole playlist.
