Eight Virginia Commonwealth University students have been named semifinalists for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the 2022-2023 academic year. These candidates will advance to the final round and will be notified of their selection on a rolling basis from March through May. 

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. The program operates in over 160 countries worldwide. Over 2,000 grants are given to graduating seniors, recent alumni, and graduate students to conduct research, carry out creative projects, pursue a year of postgraduate study, or teach English abroad.

VCU’s eight Fulbright semifinalists include seven current students and one alum. Semifinalists are listed below with their name, host country, and grant type:

  • Liza Abraham, a member of the Honors College, who will graduate in May with dual degrees in psychology and chemistry from the College of Humanities and Sciences, applied to Mongolia for an English Teaching Assistant award.
  • Rose Chang, who received her bachelor’s degree in international studies and foreign language (Spanish) from the College of Humanities and Sciences in 2021, applied to Costa Rica for an English Teaching Assistant award.
  • Octavia Christopher, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s in biology from the College of Humanities and Sciences, applied to Colombia for an English Teaching Assistant award. 
  • Spencer Graves, who will graduate in May with a master’s in public administration from the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs, applied to Morocco for an English Teaching Assistant award. 
  • Nanda Nana, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s in biology from the College of Humanities and Sciences, applied to Cameroon for a Study/Research award in Public Health. 
  • Michael Portillo, a member of VCU Globe, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s in economics from the School of Business, applied to Uzbekistan for an English Teaching Assistant award. 
  • Stefanos Psaltis-Ivanis, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s in history and international studies from the College of Humanities and Sciences, applied to Serbia for an English Teaching Assistant award. 
  • Sofia Syed, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s in philosophy from the College of Humanities and Sciences, applied to Bulgaria for an English Teach Assistant award.
