Two Virginia Commonwealth University students have been selected for RISE Germany (Research Internships in Science and Engineering). RISE Germany offers undergraduate students from North American, British, and Irish universities the opportunity to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions.

Abigail Andrade, a junior studying Biology, Physics, and Spanish in the College of Humanities and Sciences, and Mac Salter, a junior studying Electrical Engineering in the College of Engineering, were named RISE Germany recipients.

RISE students are carefully matched with doctoral students and researchers (only from universities of applied sciences) – whom they assist and who serve as their mentors. Interns receive a monthly stipend to cover everyday costs and about 300 scholarships are available each year.

Abigail Andrade

Andrade, a member of the Honors College, will be researching the molecular and cellular aspects of the interaction between T and B cells in the human immune system to have a deeper understanding of autoimmune diseases and potentially develop treatments at the Institute of Immunology at the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein. Currently, Andrade is a member of VCU Heros, Health Brigade, Crossover Healthcare Ministries, Bensley Bermuda Volunteer Rescue Squad, the VCU Campus Learning Center, and the VCU Collective Corazón. In the future, Andrade hopes to participate in other research projects and attend medical school to become a physician.

Mac Salter

Salter will be researching a novel approach to create electrically conductive polymer micro-sensors using UV laser lithography with an interpenetrating polymer network. Currently, Salter is a member of the Magnetocalorics VIP team, the Dean’s Undergraduate Research Initiative (DURI), is a Teacher’s Assistant, and works in labs with Dr. Radhika Barua and Dr. Nathaniel Kinsey. After graduation Salter hopes to attain a Master’s degree or Ph.D.

VCU’s National Scholarship Office (NSO) assists students and recent alumni with the application process for RISE Germany and other esteemed awards. To learn more about external funding opportunities, schedule an appointment with a member of the NSO staff.
