Interested in studying languages abroad? Mr. Jeff Wing, Director, National Scholarship Office, will lead an information session about the Critical Language Scholarships and Boren Scholarships & Fellowships on Tuesday, August 28 at 2pm in Room 1303 at The Honors College (701 W. Grace St.). Since both of these programs are funded by the US government, US citizenship is a requirement for eligibility.
CLS provides full summer funding for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced study of Azerbaijani, Bangla/Bengali, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Turkish and Urdu. CLS also provides funding for Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced study of Arabic and Persian for those who have the equivalent of one year of college-level study in the language. Boren Scholarships and Fellowships offer unique opportunities for U.S. undergraduates and graduate students to study abroad in world regions critical to U.S. interests (including Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America & the Caribbean, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Successful candidates should be willing to spend an entire academic year studying the target language and culture of the host country. Candidates for the Boren awards choose their own study abroad program and commit to working for the federal government for one year for each year of funding received.
The Boren Scholarships also offer a special initiative for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) majors. The scholarships fund up to $8,000 for summer study (minimum of 8 weeks) for students majoring in the STEM fields. STEM field majors may also apply for semester and year programs.
