VCU President Michael Rao with Young Alumni Council Members Harlan Hendricks (D ’08) and Melanie Crisp (D ’09)

Graduates of the last ten years met on February 19, 2010 to network and hear first-hand from university administrators about the school and VCU’s future. Topics for the meeting included an update on existing programs, the impact of the budget shortfall, the interim process, and search for a new dean.

In an informal session President Michael Rao discussed VCU’s budget and his plans to fully realize the tremendous potential of the dental school and of the university. Dr. Rao praised the research and the cooperative innovative faculty. He also commended the classes of 2008 and 2009 for their class gifts.

“These gifts are a marvelous example of what happens when students feel passionately about their school,” said Dr. Rao. “This kind of effort can serve as a model for others and encourage them to give back in similar ways. I expect someday soon a class will figure out a way to out do you.”

Dr. Rao emphasized the serious budget shortfalls that VCU faces this year. The estimates for the shortfall are as high as $3.5 billion for the remainder of this fiscal year and the next biennium. By FY 2012, VCU is slated to receive $34.8 million less in state support than it did in FY 2001 – despite educating more than 9,000 additional students.

“We need to strive for financial independence,” he said. “We are far too dependent on state dollars.”

The School of Dentistry’s Interim Dean, Dr. Dave Sarrett, amplified the magnitude and seriousness of the budget in a follow-up presentation. He provided detailed information about the reasons for the shortfall and some of the ways the school is already addressing them including a program for internationally trained dentists and increases in tuition.

After lunch, attendees engaged in a session with Dr. B. Ellen Byrne, senior associate dean and search committee member. Dr. Byrne walked them through the search process, answered questions and solicited ideas about what they would like to see in a new dean.

“It was great to meet the president and see everyone,” said Dr. Harlan Hendricks (D’08). “I’m looking forward to the next meeting.”
