The 18th Annual Women in Science, Dentistry and Medicine (WISDM) Professional Achievement Awards were presented to two Virginia Commonwealth University faculty members for their special contributions and accomplishments in the schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

This year’s recipients, who were honored at the annual WISDM Leadership Conference this month, include Joann N. Bodurtha, M.D., professor of human and molecular genetics, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, and epidemiology and community health, and Carolyn Booker, Ph.D., associate dean of students and associate professor in the VCU School of Dentistry.

A former WISDM president, Bodurtha has demonstrated her leadership skills as director of the Virginia Leadership in Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, and as co-director of the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women’s Health Program of the VCU Institute for Women’s Health.

Booker has more than 20 years of experience in higher education and serves as course director for ethics and professionalism as well as patient management and professional conduct. She also is president-elect for the National Association of Medical Minority Educators.

This year’s conference theme, “Moving Up, Moving Out, Moving On: Career Transitions,” featured workshop topics such as presentation basics, social networking in medicine, financial wellness and planning for promotion and tenure. The conference is sponsored by the VCU Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, the VCU Health System and McGuire Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Joan M. Lakoski, Ph.D., associate vice chancellor for academic career Development at the University of Pittsburgh, presented this year’s keynote address, sharing her expertise on career transition challenges and opportunities, and the dynamics of an academic career in today’s competitive environment.

The WISDM Professional Achievement Award is presented by the VCU Schools of Medicine and Dentistry.

The award was established in 1993 to acknowledge the special contributions and accomplishments of women faculty in the School of Medicine and to recognize those women for their special contributions, dedication, leadership, mentorship and accomplishments in the schools of Medicine and Dentistry.
