Images from afar celebrate Qatar Week at VCU
Qatar Week is an annual series of events held at the VCUarts Richmond campus every October. Organized by VCUarts Qatar and VCUarts Richmond, it offers an opportunity for both campus communities to connect, network and explore new areas of collaboration.
In conjunction with Qatar Week 2024, which takes place October 14-17, the Cabell Screen exhibit features a selection of images highlighting the Qatar campus, community, and artistry.
Images include:
- “This Sand is Made of Stars, this Sea is Made of Pearls” by Nada Elkharaini, an excerpt from the VCUarts Qatar 25th Anniversary Alumni Exhibition. The exhibition presented the work of 39 VCUarts Qatar alumni and was held at the Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art Performance space from September 26 – December 1, 2023.
- 25th Anniversary Celebration held for VCUarts Qatar’s 25th anniversary.
- “Tile Project” by MFA student Syed Erzum.
- VCUarts Qatar Building, Spring 2024.
- Dr. Radha Dalal, Director of Art History, speaking at the Hamad bin Khalifa Islamic Art Symposium held in Spring 2024.
- “Inner Structures – Outer Rhythms”, a photo of an exhibition on the power of Arabic graphic design and typography in communicating social change, showcasing the work of more than 30 designers from the culturally diverse, creatively rich, yet often misunderstood Southwest Asia and North Africa (SWANA) region.
- “Unfolding Remembrance” by Hind Al Kowari, an excerpt from the BFA/MFA 2024 Exhibition.
- “A Ramadan Feast,” an excerpt from the Ramadan Feast exhibition at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Art that opened on March 20, 2024. 40 first-year art and design students each contributed a dish for the evening’s iftar made from paper.
- “Behind the Seen” Fashion Show held in the Atrium on April 25, 2024. Excerpts include “Ceylonese”, a collection by Aanji Speldewinde, and a design by Aatikah Al-Thani’ from her “Babylon” collection.
- Hazem Asif, VCUarts Alumni and Visiting Artist, speaking at the “Art for Activism: A Poster Design Lab” workshop on November 6, 2023.
- “Doha Takeaway” by Asma Derouiche, Post Graduate Fellow at the Boost Lab Exhibition, Fall 2023.
- Erika, an excerpt from the ‘Fractal Elegies’ exhibition, VCUarts Qatar’s contribution to the world-renowned ARS Electronica Festival in Linz, Austria, from September 4 – 8, 2024.
- Painting and Printmaking student work on exhibit during the 2024 BFA MFA Exhibition.
- “Dimensions of Consciousness,” an exhibition by VCUarts Qatar PAPR students held at the Multaqa Gallery at the Qatar Foundation Student Center from January 1 – 28, 2024. Excerpts include works by Hissa Al-Kuwari and Bahair Al-Khulaifi.
