What happens after you call the helpline?
The confidential Virginia Problem Gambling Helpline is a critical first step for any support seeker looking to begin their recovery journey. Within a few hours of calling the helpline (888-532-3500) or completing the VPGH referral form, you’ll hear from a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) who will assess your needs and connect you with the right treatment and services for your recovery journey.
Here’s what else you can expect after calling the Virginia Problem Gambling Helpline.
You’ll find a judgement-free safe space. Many support seekers struggle with feelings of shame, especially early on in their recovery. Your CPRS will provide reassurance that you’re taking the right step, that calling the helpline is a win to be celebrated.
You’ll hear from people who’ve been there. By definition, a CPRS has direct lived experience with problem gambling. They’ll share parts of their own recovery story to create a personal connection that helps you feel both understood and empowered. They’ll also help you discover your own resilience and realize that you already have the knowledge and power to change.
You’ll be connected to a trained provider. Once your CPRS gauges your readiness and what you’re looking for—whether that’s to reduce your gambling or to stop entirely—they’ll refer you to a treatment provider that suits your needs. Your CPRS will make a personal introduction and, with your permission, will share any helpful background information. Your CPRS will also check back to make sure your provider is a good fit. Finally, your provider and CPRS will work together with you on a customized recovery plan.
You’ll hear about other resources. Your CPRS will share other available resources, from residential treatment programs and peer support groups to financial counseling and apps that block gambling ads on your electronic devices. They can also help you through the self-exclusion process to restrict your access to both in-person and online gambling.
You’ll find a community. As you continue on your journey, you’ll meet other support seekers—some who have been in recovery for years and others who are just getting started. You’ll have opportunities to share your own recovery story and learn from people with different experiences and perspectives.
We’ll keep checking back. Your CPRS will follow up on your progress throughout your first year in recovery and beyond to ensure you’re staying on track and getting the support you need. They won’t expect you to change overnight and will stick with you even—and especially—when you’re struggling.
Most of all, you’ll find a sense of hope. From your first call to your final follow-up, you’ll hear from people who want to inspire you to keep choosing recovery.
