Franklin Street in autumn

As we take pause in our work and studies to join together with friends and family, I am grateful for Virginia Commonwealth University and our strong community. VCU’s faculty, staff, students and alumni make our university a great place to live, learn, create, innovate and heal.

So much has been accomplished since the start of classes in August — it’s hard to believe that the semester is winding down.

More than 31,000 students come to VCU to continue their education. Our university is the academic launching pad for a large number of students who are the first members of their family to pursue higher education. It is an honor that they chose to do so at VCU. I am proud of the hard work done by all of our students and enjoy witnessing their accomplishments in the classroom and the community. I look forward to seeing the continuation of their hard work when they become proud alumni of Virginia Commonwealth University.

This year, my faculty colleagues broke records for research funding, placing VCU among the nation’s top 100 research universities. Research conducted at VCU is interdisciplinary, bringing new perspectives to complex problems. Through collaboration, we can improve the human condition in Richmond, throughout Virginia and globally.

I am grateful that we are able to contribute to the health and well-being of our community. From the completion of the Virginia Treatment Center for Children to our commitment to the East End community, it is imperative that all members of our community have the opportunity to thrive and live a full life.

This November, I am heartened by and thankful for all that has been accomplished — more than can be enumerated in a blog post—in just a few months.

You make VCU an exemplary 21st century university. Thank you.
