Michael Rao, Ph.D.

Dear VCU and VCU Health System Communities,

We are pleased to inform you that VCU and VCU Health System are coming together to establish a health education and wellness center in Richmond’s East End.

The health education and wellness center will be located at the intersection of Nine Mile Road and 25th Street as part of a larger redevelopment initiative that will also feature a grocery store, apartments and a culinary institute operated by J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. In addition, this center is in collaboration with other community partners, including Bon Secours and the City of Richmond’s Office of Community Wealth Building.

The VCU center will provide health education, wellness, prevention and care coordination services to the area’s residents.

Today, Steve Markel, a longtime supporter of VCU and the investor leading the grocery store initiative, will publicly announce our partnership.

This initiative presents us with an opportunity to collaborate with the community in a new way and advance our mission. We look forward to building our relationships with these community partners, and we look forward to working with you in the coming year as plans for this initiative take shape. It is through our collective action that we can — with the community — help create long-term, sustainable solutions.

We will continue to keep you informed about the progress of this exciting initiative.

Sincerely,

Michael Rao
