Earlier this week, I had the pleasure of honoring two distinguished faculty colleagues who were given Outstanding Faculty Awards by the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

Lawrence Schwartz, who serves as who serves as the Charles and Evelyn Thomas Professor of Medicine and the chair of the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology in the Department of Internal Medicine, and Everett Worthington, Commonwealth Professor in the Department of Psychology, are longtime members of our faculty who have contributed much to Virginia Commonwealth University and — most importantly — have made a profound difference in the lives of generations of students. They are experts in their fields and tireless and passionate leaders for our university and in the communities we serve.

A SCHEV Outstanding Faculty Award is a big deal. They are the highest honor given to faculty members at colleges and universities across Virginia for “superior accomplishments in teaching, research and public service.”

This only begins to describe the contributions that professors Schwartz and Worthington have made. Simply put, they are international experts who have changed their fields through their groundbreaking research, and whose teaching have shaped the minds of countless students. They are also exceptional colleagues and human beings, and I count them among the many reasons why VCU is a nationally premier research university.

I congratulate them on this tremendous award and join those across the commonwealth in thanking them for their exceptional contributions to VCU and the world.
