Eight VCU School of Pharmacy graduate students, six recent alumni and two faculty members enjoyed the 18th Annual International Meeting of the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research in New Orleans. This year’s meeting theme was “Patient-Centered Outcomes: Focusing on the Patient.”

Kudos go to VCU’s ISPOR chapter  for receiving third place in the Outstanding ISPOR Student Chapter of the Year competition. In addition:

Urvi Desai (Ph.D. ’11) received a Best Podium Research Presentation award for “Medical, Drug and Work-Loss Costs of Diabetic Foot Ulcers.”
Abdul Alsalman (M.S. ’09, Ph.D. ’13) was one of four students selected from among hundreds of applicants worldwide to present his research at the Student Research Showcase. He spoke on “Expanding Concepts of Opiod-Taking Behavior in Sickle Cell Disease: A Multi-Phase, Mixed Methods Study.” (Still a student when selected for this honor, he now is a graduate of the school.)
Toni Coe, president of VCU’s ISPOR chapter, won an ISPOR Distinguished Service Award.
Maryam Alowayesh (Ph.D. ’13) was a finalist in the Best Poster Presentation competition with “Acute Pharmacological Treatment Given to Older Adults With Acute Myocardial Infarction: A Nationwide Emergency Department Study, 1992-2010.”
Arpamas Seetasith (Ph.D. ’13) presented a poster on “Impacts of Black Box Warning, National Coverage Determination and Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies on the Inpatient On-Label and Off-Label Use of Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents.”
Maitryee Mohanty presented “Effect of Statins in Delaying the Progression of Diabetic Kidney Disease: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Trials.”
Kunal Saxena presented “Association Between Cardiovascular Biomarkers Levels and Cigarette Smoking Among Current, Past and Non-Smokers Using NHANES 2007-2010.”
Nantana Kaisaeng (Ph.D. ’13) presented “Costs and Use of Oral Cancer Medications Among Senior Medicare Part D Beneficiaries.”
Della Varghese presented “Prevalence of Anti-Diabetic and Anti-Lipidemic Medications in Children and Adolescents Using Atypical Antipsychotics in Virginia Medicaid Population.”

Also in attendance were alumnus Dipen Patel (Ph.D. ’10); students Lauren Cox, Batul Electricwala, Abner Nyandege and Anisha Patel;  professor Norman Carroll, advisor to the VCU chapter of ISPOR; and professor David Holdford, director of the graduate program for the school’s Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science.

ISPOR chapter vice-president Kunal Saxena reported, “We all had a great time in New Orleans!”

The 19th Annual International Meeting will take place May 31-June 4 in Montreal, Canada.
