May 21 – Upcoming High School Graduation Impacts

Dear VCU Parking Subscriber,

The Stuart C. Siegel Center will host high school graduations this year, between June 5 and June 16.  During these important events, thousands of high school graduates and their families will have the opportunity to experience Virginia Commonwealth University. Considering the large volume of traffic that will be present in the area, VCU Police has developed a regional traffic plan to mitigate traffic impacts and ensure guest and pedestrian safety.

In addition, there have been several new traffic changes implemented along Broad Street to make way for the new GRTC Pulse: BRT.  Last year, in response to these new changes, West Broad Street Deck and Bowe Street Deck subscribers were relocated to alternate facilities in efforts to maintain the safety of guests and subscribers, reduce area congestion and improve operational efficiency as more than 6,000 graduates and their visiting families entered and exited our parking facilities.  Because of these efforts, we experienced the most seamless high school graduation period to date.

We want to continue with this success, and while various options to minimize impacts for parking subscribers were carefully explored, VCU Police, in cooperation with the Parking and Transportation Advisory Committee (PTAC), has determined that relocation is necessary again this year.  However, in efforts to minimize the inconvenience for those subscribers impacted by relocation, Parking and Transportation will be sponsoring shuttles that will travel to and from the West Cary Street Deck, Jefferson Street Deck and on-campus locations throughout the day.

Please know that we were also attentive to the concerns that were posed last year and have made a few adjustments to our graduation plan based on this feedback:

  • The shuttle hours for subscribers will be extended, with the service operating from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m daily.
  • Bowe Street Deck subscribers may remain in their designated facility, but will have the option to relocate, if preferred.
  • West Broad Street Deck subscribers will have the option to park in the Henry Street Decks as an alternate relocation option, if preferred.
  • West Broad Street Deck subscribers will not be required to relocate on June 5 or June 11.

Additionally, we will continue to meet the the parking needs for individuals with mobility and disability needs.  In the event you require additional parking accommodations due to a disability, please contact VCU Parking and Transportation directly at 828-PARK (7275).

The full graduation plan can be viewed at https://parking.vcu.edu/special-events/high-school-graduations.  Additional reminders will be sent to subscribers closer to the graduation dates.

We understand that relocating can be inconvenient, so we want to thank you in advance for your cooperation and assistance in ensuring a successful high school graduation period.

Sincerely,

Chief John A. Venuti

May 14 – Upcoming Dominion work may impact traffic flow

Dominion will be performing major work along 10th and 11th Streets in the coming days.  Starting this week, 11th Street, just north of Clay Street, will be reduced to one lane intermittently for the next four to six weeks while Dominion performs switch relocation work. Signage will be posted in the area to communicate this disruption to drivers.

Additionally, Dominion will be mobilizing on 10th Street and 11th Street, beginning on Tuesday, May 15.  As part of this mobilization, the number of lanes on Leigh Street, between 9th Street and 10th Street, will be reduced to one lane, and the slip ramp onto 10th Street will be temporarily closed.  Passengers will still be able to turn right onto 10th Street at the intersection, and two-way traffic on 10th Street will be maintained.  Flaggers will present in the area to assist drivers with any disruptions.  This work is expected to be completed in approximately five months.

Please be mindful of lane closures and potential delays when utilizing Leigh Street to travel to the N Deck.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact customer service at 828-PARK (7275).
