If you received a Federal Work Study (FWS) award this year and/or think you may receive one for 2016-2017, the Honors College and National Scholarship Office want you to come work with us! FWS awards will be announced in early July and most FWS jobs will be posted later in the summer. However, the Honors College and National Scholarship Office will begin recruiting applicants before the end of the Spring 2016 semester. Those who express interest and come in for interviews will be given priority when we hire for the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 positions. NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP OFFICE: OFFICE ASSISTANT
Hours per week: 8-12

The primary responsibilities of this position are to provide quality customer service and to assist with administration of the National Scholarship Office (NSO), which is part of the VCU Honors College. Specific responsibilities include:

1) Responding to phone and email inquiries with basic information about the National Scholarship Office

2) Greeting and directing visitors in a professional manner

2) Event planning, set-up, management and clean-up for information sessions, scholarship review panels, and other events

3) Maintenance of databases related to the national scholarship competitions

4) Processing application materials submitted on behalf of national scholarship candidates

5) Managing magazine and newspaper subscriptions

6) Other duties as assigned by the NSO

Qualified and interested candidates may also have the opportunity to assist with marketing and public relations. Specific responsibilities may include:

1) Writing promotional copy and press releases

2) Managing the NSO social media accounts

3) Overseeing publicity for scholarship information sessions

4) Updating and writing new content for NSO website

Expectations:

The successful applicants must demonstrate a highly professional demeanor at all times, both on the phone and in person. They must also become knowledgeable of all Honors College policies, procedures, and program requirements and national scholarship programs administered by the National Scholarship Office. They must be able to follow directions, work independently and take initiative. This position entails working with sensitive information, and the incumbents must exercise discretion at all times.  They will be expected to consistently arrive at work on time and stay through the end of each assigned shift. If schedule adjustments are needed, they will be expected to make requests in advance and arrange for their shifts to be covered. The candidates who are hired will be expected to conduct themselves as members of the Honors College staff when working and not have personal visitors or conduct personal business during their assigned shifts.

While all students eligible for Federal Work Study are encouraged to apply, some preference may be given to those students who are already members of the Honors College or intend to apply for membership in the Honors College.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Strong written communication skills
  • Experience with graphic design, web design, and social media marketing

IMPORTANT: In order to apply for this position, applicants must be eligible for Federal Work Study and have completed their FAFSA (which was due on March 1, 2016). While awards will not be announced until June 2016 and jobs will not be posted until July 25, we are encouraging interested students to interview early. Hiring will commence after July 25 and students who are offered a position will be required to attend a training session that will take place the first week of classes. Hiring is contingent upon available work study funding/award and preference will be given to those students who interviewed before FWS jobs were posted.

1) Maintaining a presence at the front desk to answer phone calls and greet visitors in a professional manner

2) Assisting with event planning, set-up, management and clean-up for information sessions, Berglund Seminars, and other activities of the Honors College

3) Answering inquiries from prospective students and parents about Honors College admissions procedures

4) Scheduling and directing students to advising appointments

5) Managing and delivering incoming and outgoing mail

7) Basic graphic design (flyers, invitations, mailings)

8) Other duties as assigned by the Honors College

Expectations:
The successful applicants must demonstrate a highly professional demeanor at all times, both on the phone and in person. They must also become knowledgeable of all Honors College policies, procedures, and program requirements. They must be able to follow directions, work independently and take initiative. This position entails working with sensitive information, and the incumbents must exercise discretion at all times. Every effort will be made to give each worker a schedule that accommodates their academic schedules and other commitments. Once a schedule is in place, student workers will be expected to arrive at work on time for and stay through the end of each assigned shift. If schedule adjustments are needed, they will be expected to make requests in advance and arrange for their shifts to be covered. The candidates who are hired will be expected to conduct themselves as members of the Honors College staff when working and not have personal visitors or conduct personal business during their assigned shifts.
